I’m finally making decent progress!

Completed the corset for the outfit today. It was something of a bear and I really don’t know what the hell I was thinking to decide to make it lined. Surely unlined but with a bit of interfacing would have done the job as well?

It looks a little thick but I suppose  I can cope with that.

I’ll update later on if I manage to get the cage crinoline (mini) done. I can’t move on to the skirts until I have that done and on for fittings–otherwise I chance that thinsg won’t fit and /or hang right.

I’ve been somewhat stymied while trying to get the costume together. I thought I had more left over leather bits & things to use but it turns out that I didn’t.  :pinch:  So I’d been wracking my head what else I could use and that I had to hand.

The answer wasn’t pretty and didn’t fit at all with my visualization. :pouty:

But…..sometimes things just work out.

I’d forgotten that this past weekend was when the Miniatura show was supposed to be on here at the NEC.  I’d mentioned it to Mark a while ago (and we’d decided we were going to try to get to it instead of the usual collector’s fair). I’d thought it would be a great place for us to go and get some ideas & thoughts & inspiration.

So we trekked on over to Birmingham and the show.

I have very mixed reactions about it.

On one hand it was really nifty. I saw lots of amazing stuff, with real craftsmanship that made me just sigh and go wow. But I saw a lot of things that I really can’t imagine people buying (or wanting to buy).  And I have to admit to a sense of nagging irritation.

Why?

Because there is such a plethora of supplies, props & things that are all readily available for 1/12 scale. And actually even a good amount for 1:48 & 1:44.  I saw some really great things I would totally die to have be available in 1:6. From buildings to garden features, to awesome furniture to blown glass accessories and the like.

And the truth of the matter is that it doesn’t seem likely that the 1:6 hobby will ever be to that stage–of so much available.

I spoke to some of the vendors/artists and every one that I talked to never seemed to even think about the fact that there is a 1:6 hobby out there.  I got a lot of  “But why that scale? 1:12 is so versatile!” to which I answered that I have a number of highly articulated & detailed dolls & action figures–I use them in my room-sets. I don’t feel that there is anything comparable to them in 1:12.

Boy, I didn’t exactly ruffle feathers but I sure did feel like something of a freak.

So again, why is it acceptable to collect and play in 1:12?  What makes that so different from 1:6?

I tried to take some photos while I was at the show but I got my hands smacked a couple of times & figured to hell with it.

Anyway…

I’ve come away with some ideas and a small piece of leather from one of the many (I do mean many)ideas. Sure, I won’t be able to try out most of them til I’m home back in the states & with some room to spare. But I look forward to that.

Heh. I know, I am the some-time queen of procrastination. But today is the day I get to work on the girl and sew up her costume.  I’ve worked out a pattern for her corset (not difficult), and for the bolero-esque jacket.

My original plan for her skirt patterning has changed since I don’t have the right momme of silk to use for the over skirt. So instead of careful little swags & folds I think it will be either ruched up (to display the cage crinoline) or else I may make a flat one and trim it with ruffled silk (ala the time period). It’s good I chose the biscuit colored silk because at least now I can afford to make both versions & see which I like better.

I was stumbling a bit as to what to use for the hoops on the cage crinoline but I salvaged some copper wire which I think will work. I’m considering using heat shrink tubing to join the ends but I might also just rough em up & glue them to some leather and then sew that. Aesthetically that might look more in tune. I’m still worried about how the variety of silks & cotton & metals are going to balance.

Also, I know I said I wasn’t going to repaint her (I know! I change my mind so often) but I definitely think that the Natalia needs some work done on her lips. I won’t be doing it though until the outfit (and gadets to go with it) are made. We’ll see.

Anyway

Will be up on Saturday.  :getlost:

Real world (real life) stuff has created some issues.

I’ll be back online on Saturday–expect the Friday Monologue in the afternoon (EST) or Late evening (GMT).

Thanks for understanding.

Welcome to Friday Monologue #6 !!

It’s on time!!! XD I hope someone enjoys it! :w00t:

I’m still having issues with the text sizes changing & appearing blurry after exporting them (this time I tried them at 300dpi and high quality but I’m not seeing any difference) Ugh.  (Also some of the spacing between shots is a bit off–but lump it, ok?     It’s past 10:30 and I’ve been at this all day!)

And as always—your feedback and thoughts are welcome (provided they’re constructive) :cheerful:

This week has primarily been dedicated to working on & sorting out ideas for the IFDC doll/outfit/stuff. And of course yesterday was my trip to the dentist.

Talk about big scary things & being a big baby!

(yes I did break down and cry in the chair  )

Good news: in the 17 years since I went to a dentist I’ve managed to get only one cavity & my teeth are in generally good health. This excludes my wisdom teeth (which they did not x-ray—I’m not sure why they weren’t part of a full check up & exam, but I have to go back for that & a filling week after next. I expect that they’ll find at least one cavity in them since they are particularly sensitive these days)

It was a real change to see instantaneous x-rays…my mouth to the flatscreen in less than 60 seconds. Way to go technology. (at least as long as I don’t end up overdosed on radiation)

Anyway…

Am working on Friday Monologue #6 and I’m hoping to post it tonight.

A while ago I volunteered to do one of the dolls for the IFDC in July 2010.

I’d never done one before and I liked the idea of volunteering some of my skills to make a doll (that hopefully someone would be happy to own).  I received the base doll & what with all the ups & downs of life she hasn’t had a lot of attention except in my head.

I’ve been mulling over what kind of doll to make her and what to do with her. She’s “Back to Black Natalia” from Fashion Royalty.

IMO she’s a beautiful doll just as she comes.  I’d originally considered doing a repaint on her, but really, I just can’t. She has such a wonderful face/look that I’d consider it just about sacrilegious for me to do it.

So, instead I’ve been thinking about how to style her that can make the best use of her looks while still allowing me to put my creative stamp on her.But one that won’t be too radical so that whoever gets her at the convention will still be happy.  So it’s come down to her outfit & accessories I think.  As usual, whatever I make is going to have to be completely removable–I don’t know about other people, but I know when I get a doll I want to be able to redress her or change her around. It’s reaaaaallly hard to do that if someone’s sewn or painted her clothing on!!

So this week is dedicated to Natalia! I’ll update as I get things done!
