Ok, I’ve been quiet the last week or so. I know. I’m still fighting this cold. But despite my total lack of energy, constant headache & coughing I was determined to work on something!! Those of you who are regular readers may recall an occasional comment about needing a student lounge/hang out area in the university dorms.  It’s the place were a lot of stuff happens without me needing to cobble together a classroom for it.

My plan on this varied (originally it was a huge room but it’s now been swapped). and it’s almost complete. It needs some further details & props but it’s definitely 2/3 of the way done as far as I’m concerned.

Points to bear in mind:

  • The Student Lounge shares the same base  & walls as the Small Living Room set (aka the Friday Monologue room) & the Kitchen set & the Student Dorm Bedroom Set.
  • The curtains need to be re-done & hung correctly.
  • I need to paint the coffee table.
  • I painted some uber-ugly paintings for the back wall (the wall behind the sofa) which I’ll hang the next time I take pics.
  • I have decided I am going to remove the chain cords from the hanging lamps.  I was going for a certain look but they simply look too distracting.
  • I’m proud of the tiny cork board I made. And yes, it’s real cork. It’s very small & very fine so it will look correct in scale for close up shots.

Ok soooo… Here are a few pics (I promise I’ll take more of them when I get back and can actually update the website/ Dioramas section).  These are just showing the roomset from a couple different angles–since I was trying to figure out how I wanted to do the room’s layout.

View from the front (window wall removed)

View from the back wall (removed)

Partial view from side wall (I was too beat to remove the walls at this point

Anyway I expect I’ll be back to finishing it up next sunday. Then after that it’s back to fireplace building & livingrooms & cafe making!

Did I mention that this month has been crackin’ busy? I don’t seem to be able to catch my breath between the weekly sewing challenges & working on the fireplace and the apartment diorama and trying to develop some characters for the new photostory!

Anyway I wanted to share an update on how the roomset  for my Fashion Royalty girls Giselle, & yet to be named Kyori is coming along!

1:6 scale apartment

You can see where my fireplace is going to go (once I finish cladding it in stone).

I know that looking at it like that it might be kind of hard to imagine it…. So fast forward two weeks and this is what it currently looks like:

(I have more progress to show on the fireplace but I haven’t got an upto date pic so that will wait until over the weekend)

You can see the french doors in process along with the windows. Still need to work out the handles for the doors as well as the locks/latches for the windows.

This week coming:

  • need to cut the flooring
  • finish the fireplace
    • cut & attach stonework
    • paint stones & grout
  • paint the living-room walls (and decide on what color the accent (fireplace) wall should be.

Anyway that’s the update for now! Feel free to comment! :)

Yep. I said Free! Now, before you all start thinking my blog’s been taken over by one of those crappy marketing bugs lemme ‘splain!

I’m a member and a general lurker of the Doll Divas board. I’ve hung out there a lot the last 5 years and although I don’t post a lot I generally take part in the contests & games that they schedule a few times a year. I like winning treats & prizes –who doesn’t?

On Saturday the 30th of October the Doll Divas board is having what they call a Monster Mash.

You don’t have to be a regular board member to join in (although i guess it would be nice if you were or well, at least visit it occasionally! Like my blog! LOL)

This year I’ve donated some goodies from my Etsy Shop  to add to the fun.  Couple of books, some pillows–the little things that do help dioramas & roomsets feel a little more complete. :)

Here are the previews (LOL)

I thought it would be good to give back and spread some of the prop-love. And yea, if you win something (or even if you don’t!) feel free to check out my etsy shop…

Hope to see you there having fun! :)

.

This is just a quick update for anyone who’s actually following along with my efforts in making the fireplace! Not a whole lot to show…but I’m getting there.

Here’s what I spent the last day or two doing:

Saw, saw,saw…and saw some more!

And after cutting out all 50+ pieces (I’m not even ready to begin thinking about how many I have to do for the rest of it) I decided to work on the inside of the fireplace.

They’ve been given the first coating & wash of paint to help make the mortar look ok.

and here they are with another darker coating: (initially I was going to make the bricks red…now I dont know if I should leave them grey since the mortar for the rest of the fireplace will be grey too.)

Other than that not a whole lot to show so far. Ok, well I did manage to stab and slice my index finger pretty badly today (can we say ouch!) but hopefully it will mend soon.

Also known as– Happy Birthday to Meeee!

Yes, that’s right…My birthday’s rolled around again and this year I’ve really hit the jackpot as far as presents go! *giant grin* I was really lucky & got a package in the mail from my good friend Carmen (you know her, right? The Chick who runs Smidgehouse?!)

Look at the giant box, right? (Just try to imagine it without the huge cat on top of it, ok?)

and of course Electra had to stick her nose in too….

This was a really special package for me because not only had Carmen included all sorts of goodies for me (including bright & cheery tissue paper) BUT–it also had part of the birthday presents I’d bought myself! I’ll show you those last)

So there were all sorts of great things in here:(all nicely wrapped BTW & a sweet card)

(I’m terrible at actually taking pics when opening stuff so sorry–these are crap but let me tell you–awesome stuff!)

Did I mention nicely wrapped??!!

Anyway, Carmen got me the package of Barbie Basics shoes I’ve been drooling over & trying to get (but failing miserably!)

Yay! Shooooooes! Some of them will invariably get repainted to blend into wardrobes a bit more but Yay!!  And I know it’s hard to tell from the pic below–but there are swiss rolls (yum), Paintbrushes (yay!) and doll clothes (woo!)

This is a better shot of the clothes (I think these might be from the Liv doll line?) And I know I’ve been around Blythe’s too long when I thought the trim choker/scarf thing was a headband/hair band for Blythe LOL!

And some nifty trays! If you want some similar to these you can find them in her lovely shop at etsy! Eugenia is modeling the liv top.

And here’s probably my most favorite gift:

And here you can see it with the 2 presents I bought myself:

Yea. I broke down and bought them both! And Actually there’s a Flight Pattern Kyori headed my way too. I tell you a long drought without any dolls or action figures and now I’ve gone a little overboard….maybe?

And I got an awesome “e-card” from Nat over at Milkshake Melody!

That’s my Shay getting into naughtiness!

And of course, there’s the other awesome present—the windows & doors Mark is making for my Living-room diorama! You can see the spot that my fireplace-in progress is going to go!

and here are the door frames:

I’ll take better pictures of everything later! I promise!

As I mentioned in the previous post I wanted to make a fireplace for the new living room set.  Bear in mind that I haven’t made one before and that I’m making it up as I go along. LOL

The fireplace itself is made in 3 different sections (it was just easier for me that way, plus I wanted to make it removable so I can take it with me when I go) Anyway, I’m going to post some of my preliminary photos here (they aren’t much to look at since I still need to add the “stone”.

I did the usual “research” which involved remembering the fireplaces in previous places I lived & of course, searching the web for interior design pics so I could pinpoint the kind of fireplace I wanted to make. I had a kind of vague idea in mind before I started but then I found a couple I really did like the look of (well, with a few small changes)

These were the main inspiration photos:

I liked the field stone look of them, and the arched opening to the fireplace.  I wasn’t thrilled with the mantles on either of them so I’ve taken some liberty there too. And ok, on the “hearth” as well.

This is what I’ve come up with so far (yes, I have to now cut out all the “stone” for this which is probably going to take me the rest of the week & part of the weekend!)Forgive the crappy photos but I just didn’t feel like dragging out the real camera.

At least right now–even at bare-bones– it resembles a fireplace. I’m pretty sure that once everything is all cut out (oh little fret-saw! I wish you were magic!) and put in place, painted & weathered it’ll look ok.

I’m not happy that I ended up making the opening a bit too high *shrug* but then maybe it’s a quirk of whoever had it put in the building to begin with? *sigh*

I’ve already scribed in the firebricks for the inside of the fireplace too. So those will get painted and weathered. I’ll also need to make some fire dogs/andirons for inside & I’m now starting to consider making a fire screen as well….I swear–one thing really does lead to another!

I’m off to the movies in a little bit for a dose of retro-geekery (yes, Back to the Future!)

Yep!

I’m not sure if I mentioned it elsewhere on the blog in passing but I’ve started working on a new roomset.  I know, you folks are wondering why I’m bothering.  Suffice to say that it’s a break from the other stuff.  Sometimes when I feel pressured to get something done (the cafe) I’d rather just switch gears completely and come back to it after.  It helps to keep me from burning out so I go with it. The same applies to my dolls & figures too, if you were wondering.

Anyway, for the curious among you, it’s going to be a living-room.

It’s being made on my largest roomset base (this is the one that the cafe and Yseult’s living room uses).  I had wanted it to be on the medium sized base but D’oh! I realized too late that I let Mark burn that base in our wood stove last month! *ah well, you know that’s how hindsight works, right???*

I started planning it last week.  The only thing I knew for certain then was that:

  1. it was to be an apartment for my 2 actresses (Giselle & Charlotte (the tentative new name for  Kyori))
  2. and that I wanted a fireplace in it.
  3. I wanted the roomset to open into the kitchen & have 2 doors leading into the girls’ bedrooms. (the bathroom is off a hallway from the kitchen along with the 3rd room which is currently unoccupied–but probably will be soon!)

Lately I’ve been feeling sort of bored with just plain walls and I thought it would be a good architectural feature. (My experiment with wallpaper on the diorama walls was ok, but it just doesn’t put up w/ the wear and tear of moving around in my confined spaces) And I haven’t made one before so that’d be good.  Get some new skills & stuff you know? I’m starting by making 3 boxes to be the main body, the chimney breast and the inside of the fireplace (so it has real depth). Then I’m going to cut out with a fret saw all the stonework & stuff. It’s going to be a bitch, but quite possibly by the time I finish it (I’m aiming for Friday or Saturday) mark might have the windows & doors done and I can paint the roomset on Sunday & start using it!

(Plus he’s kind of motivated to make them since it means I’ll finally show people the bed & night tables he made me for x-mas last year (and that I got June of this year LOL!)

Anyway here’s how the floor-plan looks:

and for those curious about the rest of the apartment (and the rooms that exist or need to be built:

Since my birthday is this week, and since Mark “got” me Electra who since decided she is his cat….I felt kind of shortchanged on the birthday-present kind of thing.

I talked Mark into making the windows & doors (I’m reusing the archway from the kitchen so that’s just a hole cut in the MDF).  However he (not me!!) came up with the bright idea of using French Doors for the main bedroom because the room was looking sort of crap with just plain doors.  He also stated it would be a good test run to making them since he needs to work out how the doors will interlace (to close /open).

AFAIAC It’s all cake to me since it’s way better than I’d ever have the patience to do! *and hey, I’m not going to look a Gift-from Mark in the mouth either!*

So there you go. He’s making windows & doors–I’m making a fireplace, I’ll be doing the next sewing challenge this week too, and next week I’ll start making the furniture for the roomset (and after that the furniture for Charlotte/Kyori’s room) (although I still might name her Vonda instead of Charlotte. Gotta decide yet for certain!)

I’m not making as much progress as I’d like to with the cafe, but I’m optimistically aiming to have the majority of it done by August.

Today the only thing I have to show is the chairs & tables that have now (yay!) been repainted (the first part) for the inside.

Remember they started out like this:

Of course I got Mark to make me new (smaller) table tops. With them smaller it’s closer to what I want the cafe to look like (but of course they needed to be painted).

The weather’s been pretty crummy lately as far as spray painting goes but they are finally done.  I debated on making them brown or black, but I wanted to go with the wrought iron look so black won out. Now I’ll need to detail them (with more paint) and I’m thinking about if I should make flat cushions for the chairs (something) If I do that I can tie the color in with the walls & color theme of the cafe (the red back wall, the dark wood, the creme walls & the blue-green wall)

Here they are so far:

customizing the barbie furniture

I’m thinking of leaving off detailing them (other than the cushions) until I get the cabinets & counters done.

Anyway, maybe I’ll have more to update over the weekend.

It dawned on me the other night that I don’t actually have any photos of all my different roomsets in one place. Prior to that I hadn’t had any thought to the fact or that it might be handy to people who visit the blog.

This is your chance –you lurkers & regular readers :P — to speak out and tell me if you think I should either add a tab on the blog for that, or possibly make a section for them on my website (which has a planned re-vamp coming). If you have an opinion one way or the other please leave a comment on this post.  Also if there’s any additional information you’d want with the diorama/roomset info.

So?

Would you like to see my roomsets all put in one place? Possibly with information on how I made them or what I did to custom them?

Or…

Do you just want to continue to troll Flickr, My blog & various forums where I post them piecemeal?

Comments? Opinions?

I know, I bet y’all thought I haven’t been doing much lately, haven’t you?  Ok…I can admit that I go in cycles. I make plenty of stuff but sometimes it’s the effort of setting them up for photos that just does my head in! (So consequently things get boxed up and stuck in a “photograph later” corner of the room.) But I have baked goods & furniture to share now!

But this week I managed to photograph a bunch of them — partly due to Carmen’s encouragement & general “go girl” attitude! Thanks C!   If you’re interested in seeing more photos of them you can check out my Etsy (where they’re all listed!)

I’ll start with the baked goods then follow up with the furniture!

Pink frosted Chocolate Cupcakes

Chocolate Peanut-butter Fudge Bars

Small Moonpies

Chocolate Chocolate Cupcakes

And here are the couches I’ve made!

Maroon Couch

Sage green Couch

Thanks for looking! :D

I bet y’all thought I’d stopped working on the cafe, didn’t you??!! :silly:

Well you’re wrong! Hehe! I’ve been slowly (very) working on the bits and pieces that go on in the inside. You know things like shop fixtures & whatnot. So while the walls are still unpainted (except for the white basecoat to seal the MDF) it is still moving forward.

Here are some pics!

Obviously there’s still a lot to be done before these pieces can be considered “done”. I’ve got to paint them with wood grain, pick out some detailing & some other tweaking…. but I thought folks might want to see them “in process” instead of just when they were finished…?

I’m still debating on painting or papering the top & inside of the re-ment counter. I’ll figure it out eventually though I’m thinking I might go with antique gold or brass look for it since that’s a partial theme in the cafe.

I still need to add a hinged flap/to the counter so that I can keep students & other customers from randomly walking behind the counter.

Some of what was done so far:

  • all of the pieces were raised up between  (depended on the piece of furniture.  I wanted the counters to be higher (maybe because I’m short so all counters are naturally higher to me–but doll furniture never seems to be tall enough)
  • All pieces were cleaned (w/soap & water).
  • The barbie counter sides were cut off (they over hung) and the additional pieces were glued on for more detailing.
  • They were all primed & then given a base coat of brown paint.

For those of you who might be curious the counters started life as a barbie counter & a re-ment bakery store counter. The back counters were a sink & a stove from pedigree sindy. I really gotta say the pedigree furniture sure does make for good stock bases for stuff!!!

If anyone’s actually interested in the step-by-step stuff post and or write and let me know. I don’t want to bore people with more details than I have to!

Making good headway with the cafe project!

Here are some pics to look at! (I’ll try to explain what I’m trying to get across in them)

This is the back & side of the cafe (before being primed for painting). You should always prime MDF since otherwise it pretty much sucks in coat after coat of paint… ugh.

This is the front of the cafe.

I’m working on what style doorknob/latch I want. And I need to make the mailbox/slot insert. I’m thinking something like worn brass or aged bronze for it and the door handle.

It’s also had the inside walls primed, the front’s been painted with a sand textured paint (it might end up becoming another color but that’s just for now). Some scribed in bricking was added for detail (though it might end up being lost when I make the awnings for the front.

DO you think there needs to be an awning over the door as well as the window? Or just the window/table seating area?

Here’s a shot through the window—you can see the lovely round (smaller) tops that Mark made for my barbie table bases!

Since they started out looking like this:

I think they’re much more in keeping with the cafe feel & size now. (after all they need to pack customers in, don’t they!??!)

This is the front of the cafe with makeshift sidewalk bases in place. These are previous diorama roomset bases that didn’t end up getting used… (yes they’re small–they were for things like bathrooms & storage closets LOL) so they’re getting used for this.  I’d have liked them to be a bit narrower but eh, I got what I got and that’s what I got! I plan on actually extending them a bit lengthwise so that I have more play with angles I use to shoot.

This is pretty much the whole set (for now) the main diorama roomset, the spacing out front of it for seating & some scenery stuff, and the off side area where the archway is (which could turn into another room down the line if I really needed it to)

Annnnd…there you have it. The current state of the Un-named Cafe Roomset/diorama!

Not a lot to share, just some more in-progress pics. I know it’ll be hard to imagine exactly what I have planned….but this gives you something of an idea I guess? (as usual if you want to see the image full size click the white  box at the bottom of it) :cheerful:

As you can see I took your advice & re-sized the table tops to make room available for a couch/sofa area.  I still need to actually make a small couch (love-seat) to go there but I want to hold off on that until I get the walls painted to be sure that the fabric I use is a good match.

Annnnnnnnd…… Here you can see where I decided to go for it and add the seating area outside the front.  Yea, it means a little more work (making an awning) but I’d have to have done stuff anyway since you’d see out the window from inside the cafe anyway!

And just for shits & giggles, here’s a shot (blurry) as seen through the kitchen door’s window:

I’m hoping to feel better tomorrow & to get started on painting the walls & the furniture as well as starting on the counters (I have plans!)

UPDATE on the Cafe: http://corsetkitten.com/blog/archives/3053

Today before going to the grocery store Mark & I stopped off at B&Q (the UK version of Home Depot).  I wanted to check out the paint swatches (since I’d determined the color palette I wanted to use) and he wanted to find some glass paint for our gate & interior door.

Well the morning started off kind of crummy.  We got out to find that someone keyed the side of the van. Not great.   worse in fact because then mark concentrates & dwells on it. The neighbor’s car had been done too so I think it was just one of the many people who walk up and down the street w/o anything better to do. Similar to when  the side mirror got punched off last year by the angry guy. :pouty:

Back to the point though—despite the crap start things turned out pretty well. Got to the store & managed to pick up some small samples (not free) of paint (50ml-100ml) in 3 colors (the muted teal, a cream/offwhite, and a red (I thought I’d go for it since I can’t be sure that the sheen on the original paint I had planned will work (but better too much paint to choose from than not enough). Better still each sample came in at under 2 pounds a shot which meant a little bit of money left! I picked up 2 samples of wall paper while I was there–I’m thinking of seeing if I can use it for the cafe’s flooring (if the dark wood floor ends up being too dark for the completed set).

Later this week (likely Sunday) we’ll get the walls completed (doors in set, skirtingboards & picture rail)  so I can paint them, the doors & the trim.

Tomorrow I want to figure out some plans with the furniture and what I’m going to do with it.  And for it–the counters especially need some thought & sketches doing. I figure I probably ought to have a plan before I blindly attack them with primer paint & glue!

Anyway am off to bed now.

Color! Color! Oh what a world of color!!! :w00t:

You know, there’s a reason I use a lot of plain ol’ white walls in my dioramas & roomsets. They don’t clash & the match with just about anything I toss in them. And of course it means I don’t have to wrestle with my color-commitment demons! (those are the ones that make me go to sleep with clenched teeth while trying to decide on color schemes for things like couches, furnishings, quilting….)

But….speaking of the Un-named Cafe (and I have a few more ideas for what it could be called :silly: ) we have to discuss color and the general ambiance & feel I want for the place.

So I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what colors I could use that would produce a semi-eclectic, interesting cafe type environment. You know what I mean, don’t you? :cheerful:

Well just in case you don’t –I trawled the internet (as part of my research for how I wanted the interior of the cafe to look like) and have a few “inspirational” photos to share. Don’t ask me where I got most of them–random google search for random words mostly.

So! Looking around I’ve realized a couple of things:

1) I like the red for the perceived warmth it gives.

2) I’m liking the kind of “harvest gold” and “pumpkin”-y colors too.

3) As far as I’m concerned only one wall should be red. The cafes that I’ve seen with more than one “dark” wall tend to be dim & dark.  Which is fine for mood & atmosphere but not so much so for my lighting set-up & clear photos for photostories.

4) I’m finding myself *unaccountably* drawn to the cafes that have multiple colors in the room (ie different walls different colors). It’s kind of radical for me (but Mark’s said that if I do it in a roomset the worst I have to do is paint over it if I find I don’t like it).

With all this in mind I tried to put together a basic/potential color palette to work with. I’m still not certain about it (since it’s based on what I have on hand, and what I can get with my last 5 bucks).

I’m not sure how this will look on other folks monitors but  we’ve got:

Olive(ish) green

Golden (harvesty orangy-yellowish)

Dark red (wine colored–this is from our front door)

Robins egg blue/ some kind

Browns (the counters, cabinets & trim as well as flooring will all be some sort of wood or wood-tone)

I found this nifty    site for messing around with colors:

COLOURlovers

And I decided to try to do the re-vamped room up in sweethome 3d again. This time with the window & door swapped around (to allow layout room for the small sofa, coffee table & chair. (the types of furniture shown are just roughs since I don’t have a lot of it in my library).

I did my first ever fly-round today using the program: (it’s not much to look at and I’m still figuring it out—but it was fun)

It’s too big for me to actually upload into the blog I guess but you can find it here:(it’ll take probably 5-10 minutes to load which I’m sure if I got better at it I;d know how to make it load faster/shorter)

Video fly-round of the cafe

EDIT:

It was suggested that the blue room was too bright & the multiple colored walls were similar to elementary school    So here’s a 2nd option with 2 of the walls the golden color instead!

Is it too much goldeness?? Yea, I think maybe….

So how about……. This?

final color choices:

As mentioned in the previous post I’m working on getting a new roomset done. It’s the cafe (currently un-named–and any suggestions are welcome!).  Mark has done a smashingly, wonderful job (heh, who says there’s no upside to loud obnoxious neighbors partying until the early hours? They make him want to stay in the shed! Woo!) So please note although the photos look like crap, the work he’s done is good stuff!

Ok, so here are the questions to keep in mind as you look at these pics:

(these are questions I’d really love some feedback on folks!)

I plan on doing the back wall (the one behind the counter) a darkish red.

  • Do you think that the other walls should be some color other than white? What color(s) would you think could go with it? (the cabinets will all be done in faux wood tones)

Another question:

  • Do you think that there needs to be some sort of “casual” seating area? Ie a couch & maybe a coffee table & arm chair? IF so–which table(s) would you get rid of to fit it in? (assume the couch is appx the size of the my scene coffee shop set one)

Yet one more:

Although Quinlan has a lot of paranormal & unexplained occurrences – it isn’t outwardly admitted that “magic” as such exists. I’d like to give a nod to that in the Cafe’s name but am finding it difficult.  Is that important?

The names I’ve come up with so far (and have been suggested to me) include:

Cafe Fantome1

Fortean Cafe2

The Caffeinatrix (yea I know I made the word up)

Bats Coffeehouse

Steep’n'Brew

Brewing Grounds

1Fantome is supposed to mean Ghost in french (so this would nudge me toward thinking the cafe is haunted by some sort of spirit).

2Fortean is in reference to Charles Fort

OK and now for the photos! (the furniture is roughly in the places I expect it would be when it’s finished)

and one from sort-of eye level (sorry, I couldn’t be bothered to stand Lori up straight for the photo!)

So….thoughts? C’mon folks!
