Now onto Number 8……

Description of Toy/Toyline: Takara Blythe
Specifically: Pow Wow Poncho, Natasha Moore & Bohemian Peace

So why did they make my list?
Surprisingly I feel sort of in love with Blythe dolls this year. I think partly because they are soooo very different than my usual dolls. They have a certain something about them that I find appealing. And for the first time in a while they’ve challenged me creatively, and forced me to consider other aspects –in sewing, photographing, and customizing them. I like the fact that I can change eyechips and scalps. And I can with some effort change her body. Thankfully!

Downside to these figures: (aka why it isn’t the #1 toy on the list!)

Ok, as much as I really like Blythe, I absolutely hate, loathe and despise her crappy body! It’s total crap. I know I’m a hard customer to please (because I’m all about articulation & posing) but the Takara Blythe body is a POS.

General Comments:

I like Blythe but why Takara can’t put her on a better body (Hello, Takara Jenny & Licca anyone?) Not that they’re great but they’d be a well & away improvement. When I have some spare money (ha ha) I’d like to try one out on a Pure Neemo Flection body and see how that goes. I know they wouldn’t be as good as a CG body but I think I could cope.

I know that my interest in Blythe dolls is hard to understand for some people. They don’t get the attraction I have to this big-headed girl (not fat headed as Mark calls them). But I do like them and I find there’s a certain charm to be found in them.

Anyway, on my Blythe to-do list:

I desperately need to complete my customizing of Natasha Moore Blythe/Emily.  Since I want her to make some appearances in the Quinlan Chronicles I do need to get a move on with it.

She’s currently in pieces!

So far the only things I’ve done is sandmatte her (which I need to do another round of) and pop in some custom eyechips. (Those are cool cat eyechips that I painted a little bit of lined on the irises). I got the other sets of eyechips to go in but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Although I like her funky hair color it doesn’t always do it for me and I was wondering what my options might be (other than buying an over pirced scalp etc).  Did you know that with a bit of work you can use the scalp from a Basaak on the blythe head? Yep. Next time I have a chance I’ll snap a couple of pics to show you. (It takes a bit of adjusting but they do work)

I do have her obitsu body ready to go.

Also Mark decided to be an utter sweetheart and bought me an early anniversary present: Bohemian Peace Blythe!

She’s nifty, eh?

I’m pretty sure I’m going to be customizing her too–maybe a pure neemo body? I dunno. (I’d still like to give Pow wow poncho a different body but the glue used on her scalp is proving impossible to get off. D’oh!

Yep. I said Free! Now, before you all start thinking my blog’s been taken over by one of those crappy marketing bugs lemme ‘splain!

I’m a member and a general lurker of the Doll Divas board. I’ve hung out there a lot the last 5 years and although I don’t post a lot I generally take part in the contests & games that they schedule a few times a year. I like winning treats & prizes –who doesn’t?

On Saturday the 30th of October the Doll Divas board is having what they call a Monster Mash.

You don’t have to be a regular board member to join in (although i guess it would be nice if you were or well, at least visit it occasionally! Like my blog! LOL)

This year I’ve donated some goodies from my Etsy Shop  to add to the fun.  Couple of books, some pillows–the little things that do help dioramas & roomsets feel a little more complete. :)

Here are the previews (LOL)

I thought it would be good to give back and spread some of the prop-love. And yea, if you win something (or even if you don’t!) feel free to check out my etsy shop…

Hope to see you there having fun! :)

This weekend (provided I can find quiet time) I’d like to work on doing a couple of new dolls for my cast. I’ve had an idea for a new student and want to work on her before the inspiration goes stale. I’d started another new character a month or two ago, a Mistress and i really do need to get around to painting her as well. Of course I need some practice before I do…..
I also need to finish up my Natasha Moore Blythe/Emily custom. She’s going to be a character in the Quinlan Chronicles also and I would like her done sooner rather than later.

Speaking of my dolls & the Quinlan Chronicles cast—-This week is going to be a “clean up” week. Sorting everyone out again & really deciding who and what I need.

With some luck, once I make some space & have moving around room I’ll get to shooting the first couple installments of the first episode of the chronicles.

I’m still working on the update of the main website. Still aiming *optimistically* to have it done by sunday evening. Might seem like a lot of time but it really isn’t (at least not when I’m up to all this other stuff LOL).

Now that I finally managed to finish the first batch of pillows & cushions for etsy, I am now trying to photograph them. I wasn’t happy with my first batch of photos *not to mention I didn’t have any dolls in those photos*.  I’m trying to do them a few each day (last night I got one set done but today I expect to get more than that done).

Part of this week/next week I want to spend sewing for my blythes & possibly finishing up my customizing of Emily (natasha moore blythe).  I’m getting frustrated when I want to dress her only to find that less than 10% of my clothing will work for her body. So! I’d done some sketches a few weeks ago & I’ll dig them out and have a go.  I’m also toying with the idea of making some steampunky  clothes for blythes as well. I figure I might as well since I like them, I have most of the materials on hand, and heck, maybe someone else would like one too! (I love etsy, really!) Not to mention I need to find the funding to pay for my domain renewal & hosting since that’s due next month. *ugh*

Things here are a little on edge for me since Electra seems to be a bit sick. She’s got diarrhea. I called the vet about it but they said not to worry at this point.  She has an appt on the 16th so if she gets worse in anyway before then we’ll take her. She still has a good appetite but I worry. :S

Mark is also in the process of inserting the stairway bannisters & railing etc. Me & the furry kittens are trying to stay out of the way. I’m very glad I am not doing it.

I’ll update again soon. Promise!

You might recall I got my paws on a Pow Wow Poncho Blythe a little while ago.  She was supposed to be my “model” girl so that when I sew and make things she can show them off. (this is because I am still customizing Emily (Natasha Moore Blythe) and I plan on putting her on an obitsu body for photostory use).  Anyway, I can’t ever leave well enough alone. I had to do something to make her more…well,  mine I guess.

So I gave it a shot (scroll past the photos and you can read about what happened & what I did) Also, does anyone care to suggest a name for her??

Before & After

Things didn’t go quite according to plan…

  • I discovered some flaws on the back of her head (back face plate) and couldn’t tell if it was from someone trying to get into her head at an earlier time or what. The plastic is indented and has fracture lines in it.
  • I gave a few tries at getting her scalp off (used the knife around it) but it wasn’t budging & I didn’t think it was going to be worth the effort (so no boggling her eyes).
  • Her eyes bug me a bit because they are so very downward-looking. It’s nice for some shots but actually changing the eyechips turned out to be a hassle. I had to tape her eyelashes back and try while holding the hot melt glue to hold the other eye so that it was sort of centered (it’s kind of hard to explain). I used some coocat eyechips I got from Plastic Paradise Forum.
  • I found it a lot more difficult to sandmatte her face while it was still attached to the whole head. I haven’t done the best job but I have managed to take off the major shininess.  I will probably go another round with it in the future when I’m feeling a little more love.
  • I repainted her lips but I only did them as a temporary “for now” measure.  I’ve never been a big fan of cotton candy pink lipstick, and she had puce green eyeshadow.  So not a color scheme I adore in cosmetics (ok, in anything!).They’re ok, and better than the Candy Pink ones but I can do better & smoother. Later.
  • Did my best to sad off the eyeshadow. Not certain I’m going to try to repaint them with any since it’d be more hassle since I’d not be removing the eyes)
