What am I doing?? Why am I being so quiet on the blog this weekend?

Well, part of it has to do with organization & cleaning & re-arranging my workspace. The rest of it has to do with all the various projects I want to (and am) working on.

I’m going to give you a list of what I am doing:
(I may or may not post photos & blog about the individual projects at a later date–as they get done.) these are all running concurrently and I’m slowly getting pieces done. Right now it’ll just take more time for me to photograph as I go along and I’d really rather just get stuff done!

  • Re-organizing / de-cluttering my space (this takes longest).
  • Listing/packing up crap for ebay (this segues into the next item).
  • Buying ink cartridges for my printer.  Mark’s printer died & mine takes really expensive ink so there’s been a total-standstill on me making any kind of printable stuff (be it for etsy, or my personal prop use or whatever).

Making (or thinking of ways to make) 1:6 props for the students:

  • I am trying to make a 1:6 Blythe (1 or more)
  • Art supplies for Shayna
  • Shayna’s Insanity Quilt
  • Books (that I think these students would read or have in the dorm rooms)
  • Posters for the dorm & student lounge walls
  • Finding/adjusting the student lounge to use if for PK’s Friday Monologue
  • Shooting pics for PK’s Friday Monologue
  • Blankets & comforters & pillows for using in the dorm rooms.
  • Making curtains (these are from hell. It’s getting close to the point I am going to just hang a piece of tie-dye fabric over the window LOL).
  • Painting heads (previously mentioned).
  • Sewing clothes for Astrid, Raven, Shayna & Merrit.
  • Updating the website with some of the background on how I do my dioramas & stuff.
  • Working on making Astrid’s hybrid body. I was going to use it to make the tutorial with but I think I’ll wait and do it with another body. I really just want to get things done & don’t feel like getting bogged down at the moment.
  • Going back & editing some of the Friday Monologues for future continuity.

So those are a few of the things I’m working on.

I’m trying to figure out some other sewing related stuff, I want to do some oil painting (but things need to be cleared off so I have someplace to work) and of course I need to go through my belongings again and try to weed out some more stuff to get rid of. I really want to take as little as possible with us when we move (and there IS good news related to that*at least as far as I’m concerned!*)

Getting 1:6 scale office chairs/desk chairs is really a pain in the ass.

This has come up for me a few times since I’m working on making college dorm rooms, library space &  1:6 office set-ups.  Invariably in all of these places you find the ubiquitous “office/desk” chair. The problem is that finding them ready to buy isn’t that easy.  And getting them in scale with your figures isn’t always as easy as it seems.

I mean, aside from the ZC ones…the rest of them out there….well. Let’s just say they don’t really fit my notion of an office chair.  (I’d love to drop $200.oo+ on a Vitra one –but hello, broke here!)  The office chair that the ZC dolls made is nice but it’s waaaay oversize for my Volks, Momokos & Blythes.  And yes…I know office/desk chairs come in different sizes.  I do. But this is about my preferences.  If I can’t buy what I want then I’ll make it. :P

I’m going to work with two particular types for this tutorial.  (I’m calling this a tutorial but it’s more like a bunch of loosely written instructions to kind of run-with.) Mostly because they start off pretty close to what I want and the less I have to do the better, right? ;)

First go out and find the following chairs to work with: They are the chairs from the My Scene So Chic Salon & the chair from the Barbie My House Armoire & Chair set.

The thing that makes me most inclined to work with these is the fact that the bases are pretty sturdy & they bear a pretty good resemblance to the real thing.

The one with the grey wheels is one of the My Scene chair base and the one with the black wheels is from the Armoire Set.

Note: there are actually 2 types used in My Scene doll furniture and both are good with a little work. The thing to be aware is that the My Scene Salon chairs have one type that “clicks” back (apparently for washing hair in the sink) and one that was fixed.  I’m using the fixed ones as an example, but you can use the clickers if you cut down the mechanism and shape the hole to fit them.

Here’s what I came up with: the before & after:

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • Barbie Chair Base(s) *as described above*
  • Wood/Plastic/MDF/ Foamex (to make seat parts-use depending on how sturdy you want the finished piece of furniture to be)
  • Brass/steel/aluminum/ wire or bar (to make the back-rest post)
  • Black aluminum tape OR twine (and paint the twine with acrylics)
  • Glue or Contact Cement (I personally prefer cc)
  • Batting/Foam (to pad the chair with)
  • Fabric & Tyvek (to upholster the chair)
  • Stapler
  • Needle & Thread (to match fabric)
  • Acrylic Paints (for detailing)

First:

  • Draw up an approximate size drawing of the seat you want to make, and the size of the back-rest.

  • I cut mine out of paper (I like to judge sizes that way) and then cut them out of foamex.  You can use cardboard (not good for long term use) wood (bass, pine etc),  etc. Whatever you use you want it to be fairly sturdy.

Next:

  • Remove the seat/top from whichever chair you’ve decided to use.
  • Drill/dremel/carve out a hole in the seat you’ve made to fit the post at the top of the chair’s base. (This is a good time to also carve out  the slots in the seat back & the back-rest where you’ll be inserting the brass/wire/metal to hold the back rest in place).

  • Check the fit (height wise) for the kind of doll you want to use this with.

  • I cut out batting (using those paper seat & back drafts) and glued it to the plastic. (Do yourself a favor and rough up the plastic or wood to help it adhere) This helps pad the seat and give it a bit more realism. :P At some point I’ll really go to town with one of these to see how far I can push them.
  • After the glue/contact cement has dried & you feel you’re happy with the amount of “puff” on the seat & back-rest then comes the fun part—you get to try your hand at upholstering it with your chosen fabric. I’d like to offer some how-to on this but I basically took some books out of the library and went from there. I’m not an upholsterer–and I never will be!! Experiment & prepare to do it over a couple of times until you get it to look right.
  • While you’re taking a break from upholstery you can cut a couple of thin strips of the black aluminum tape and wrap it around the metal you’re planning on using to support the back-rest. If you’re using twine (make sure it’s a small diameter otherwise it’ll look dorky) layer a light coating of contact cement/glue and then wrap the twine tightly. Once that’s dried then apply the acrylics but do not water them down any more than you absolutely have to.
  • Once you’ve upholstered the chair (the seat & the back-rest) insert the metal piece you’re going to use as the support. If you don’t plan on taking the chair apart in the future you can glue them into place.  I like to be able to flat pack my stuff as much as possible so mine aren’t glued in place.
  • To finish off the underside of the chair cut some tyvek and staple it into place (cut out the circle where the plastic base attaches). Paint it black (or whatever color you want, most of my office chairs usually had manky black semi-fabric-fiber there and tyvek seems very similar in texture to me)

And pretty much that’s it. Sit some dolls in them:

ANYHOW….. if anyone gets any use out of this tutorial….let me know, eh? I could use the encouragement.

This is just a quick note of what’s on the stove at the moment!

First: I’ve got an idea for a steampunk custom cg cy girl so I’m hoping to get to work on that this week. Found the body & head I think I can use…and now I just need to start thinking up clothing & props for it! :)

Next:  I’ve chosen the fabrics that I’m planning on using to make the bedspreads for the different students. Not a good pic, and it’s really just so that when I move them out of the way I won’t forget who gets what fabric!  :D

After that -concurrent with that: I’m working on in conjunction with the bedspreads is that I’m doing up a couple of headboards for the dorm beds.  These are pretty simple and I thought I might do a few with padding (those will be for the particularly fussy girl students).  The others will just be brown and well, headboard-y looking.

Finished: I’ve done a little bit of head rooting (which all need to be have been boil-permed/set now) & I’ve wiped a few painted heads (to re-paint them into something better I hope).  I’ll update with some photos and stuff when I’m more inclined to take pictures (and have boiled them!)

Yessss! It’s a 3-for-1 post! Threeeeee tastes of the Top 10 toys of 2010! Are you guys lucky readers or what?!  Ok, I want to get this list done and dusted by tomorrow evening so here we go!

Top 10 Toys of 2010……#4

Description of Toy/Toyline: 1:6 scale Large Sash Window.

Like many of the cool things I have this window was made to my specific request & requirements. Mark was particularly patient and although he hated putting it together (it was very fiddly) it looks great.  It is a working sash window.

So why did it make my list? It’s just cool! It’s very detailed and  I needed a window that would fit in my smaller roomset. I’d pretty much wanted it for use in the various student Dorm rooms but I’ve realized I can also use it for some other rooms in the university set up (provided I change all the decor).

Downside to it: (aka why it isn’t the #1 toy on the list!) There isn’t a downside to this piece.  It’s been slated onto number 4 simply because I got a few other things that I can get more use out of / expect to get more photo-time with. If I had to find something to complain about I’d say that it took a long time to get the window once I put in the “order”.  ;)

General Comments: I love this window.  Mark does really kick ass work when it comes to making architectural stuff for my dioramas.

Top Ten Toys of 2010 Number ……3

Description of Toy/Toyline: 1:6 scale Wooden Book Cases

These (of course) were made by Mark.  I bet y’all wonder if there’s anything he can’t make! He made these out of some scrap wood he had in his workshed. I was amazed at how quickly he made them (the longest part of the process was the repeated coats of stain he had to give the wood).

So why did they make my list? Cool factor aside, they’re fantastic. He made them so I could use them in my “University Office”. They’re great and I can totally see them being filled with books & curios.  I can easily envision them in an office where students get into trouble & professors get into political mischief.

Downside to these: (aka why it isn’t the #1 toy on the list!) Can’t complain about these. The construction (which you can’t tell from my crap photos) is very high spec & really well done. They’re 3rd place only because I liked the other 2 things just a bit more.

General Comments: I think I might be a little insane…I can see a library using these bookcases…more bookcases…. ;)

Top Ten Toys of 2010 Number ……2

Are you ready for these? It was a difficult decision placing these at #2 instead of #1.

Description of Toy/Toyline: White Shelving Units

Once more, something made by uber-cool Mark. Yes, I am seeing a definite up-side to marrying someone who is a professional model maker. :)

So why did they make my list? These made spot #2 on the list for a couple of reasons.

  • The 1st reason is that mark cranked these out at hyper-speed. I usually wait between a few weeks to a few months for an item so the fact that these were done in less than a few days really rocked it for me.
  • The 2nd, they’re awesome and completely what I needed for my student lounge.  I’d been struggling to get the furnishings I needed to be able to finish it.

Downside to these: (aka why it isn’t the #1 toy on the list!) There IS no downside! I love them. I could do with having some more!!!
General Comments: I love these to pieces. They are probably my most favorite pieces of furniture at the moment and for the foreseeable future!

=============================================

I’ll see you all tomorrow (unless my dental appointment ends in my death!) with number 1!!

Yay! It’s time for a much delayed Top 10 Toys of 2010!! :D   Today we’re doing number 5 (tomorrow will be a double post #’s 3&4).

Top Ten Toys of 2010 Number ……5

Description of Toy/Toyline: 1/6 scale Yamaha & Vespa Scooters.

There are 2 different kinds shown. These are the  more “modern” looking Yamaha Vino & the more classic Vespa.  Both types were made by New Ray.

A couple of interesting things to note: that although both were termed die-cast the Vespa version is the one which is substantially heavier & contains considerably more metal. The Yamaha Vino has much less metal and is much lighter in weight.  Out of the two I’d feel more confident about the Vespa surviving being knocked off the table.

Also the Yamaha Vinos also seem to vary from each other insofar as the undercarriage of some of them is all fake chrome-metal looking while the other undersides are all black with a little bit of accent “chrome” in places.

So why did they make my list?

I like any vehicles I can find in 1:6 scale! (Ok provided they look close-ish to the real thing). These are perfect for me to use with the 27cm Volks dollfies who are cast as the students in my photostories.  After all, we can’t have the students driving around in Porsche 911s all the time, riiiight? ;)   These are nice little scooters and have some good detailing on them.

You can find out a little bit more about the Vino here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_Vino_125

Downside to these figures: (aka why it isn’t the #1 toy on the list!) Well, as cool as they may be they aren’t as fantastic as some of the things out there. I think the build quality on the Vinos makes me mark them down a bit lower.  I’d buy another one but I’d probably wait for a good deal on the Vespa.  All of them need some work on the detailing (the Vinos most notably need some work done with regard to the side mirrors and brake cables).

General Comments: Nice to have them, glad I got them (the Vespa & one of the Vinos  were gifts from Mark.  I think I might get more in the future since they take up less space (considerably less!) than my 1:6 cars! (I could fit 6 scooters in the space my 1:6 mini cooper takes up, or the Porsche, or the Porsche Cayenne (that to me looks like a spiffed up station wagon!)

Anyway tomorrow I’ll post #’s 3 &4!

I bet you’re thinking I’ll never get through the whole Top 10 List ! (Sometimes I think that too!) But things keep popping up and other things nudge their way in front of it… One of those things was a conversation I had with a fellow hobbyist.  We were discussing doing Top 10 Lists and stuff.  They basically posited the idea that that including x-mas gifts you’d received in your list was kind of rude since you’d be “ranking” them and could lead to hard feelings.

It makes sense and I have to agree that it could be seen that way. So this has meant a slight re-shuffle of my list.

I really appreciate every gift that I’m given and I don’t want anyone thinking that someone else’s gift means more to me or is “cooler”. Well, except for Mark who totally expects to be the “coolest” LOL.

So tomorrow I’ll be back on schedule! Thanks for bearing with me!!! :)

So many people went out of their way to help make my holidays much nicer than they’d have been otherwise. They sent me well wishes, tasty things to eat, and 1:6 related goodies as well!  This post is about saying “Thank You!” and showing you some photos of the stuff! (not the exact edibles —since—urrr…I ate them!)

These are being done in the order that the gifts arrived :D

First,  from Sally over at DollyNovella: She took part in a mini-holiday swap with me and she gave me some very nice things.

Next was from Natalie over at Milkshake Melody:

She sent me all sorts of yummy goodness!(and a few things I forgot to add! Sorry!) Tea from Lupicia (my choice of flavors!), a pair of mitten-gloves, penguin candy etc…. *very happy*

Of course, she did have to send me some 1:6 doll related goodies! (I mean, really! I like food and all that but dolls & action figures are what I want at xmas time!) ;)

And from Carmen over at Smidgehouse:

More deliciously yummy stuff! Yesssss….I love junkfood, especially swiss rolls! *YUM*  And some really great (totally enviable!!)goodies!

She also gave me an adorable Blythe mug  *but mark had “hidden” it in his efforts to “tidy up” so I’ll owe y’all a photo of it later!*  And speaking of Mark…………

Yep, have to include the presents from him here too! (This was part of our 1:6 x-mas after all!)

Great stuff right?? Of course!

Thanks again everyone!

These are all super folks in the hobby & they are all really great friends! I think they couldn’t do a bad job at gift picking no matter what! :D

You’ve probably noticed that  I’m a bit behind doing the TT2010.

Real life got in the way.  Hopefully it’s about done with the drama.

I don’t know why but I am finding doing my Top 10 list particularly difficult this year. There are some really good things that I’ve gotten but it’s so difficult to actually assign them a position! ((no offense to anyone))
Anyway Number 9 on the list is………….

Description of Toy/Toyline: Barbie Convention Chair

So why did it make my list?

I had been after that office-type chair for years! I never could bring myself to pay the $$$ that I usually saw it listed for on feebay & on various doll boards.  When all is said & done it’s a pretty nice little chair which is perfect for my Fashion Royalty girls as well as any of my Volks Dollfies.

Downside to these figures: (aka why it isn’t the #1 toy on the list!)

We all know I’m pretty fussy, right? The chair although nice did have some issues that sprang from its construction. The spring in the chair was wonky and caused the chair to pop up off the base. (Thank you Mark for fixing it!).  So because of that and it’s weird color scheme of red, grey & black I have to put it at number 9.

General Comments:

This was received as a holiday swap gift. It really did make my holiday season and no matter where it ranks on the list I really do appreciate having gotten it!! Also I plan on changing the upholstery of the chair in the not far off future .

Check out these other Top 10 Toys of 2010 Lists!!! (you might want to look around for ALL their posts!)

It might be a little bit of an understatement to say that this year I kind of feel like I haven’t got much really super stuff to share. Sorry about that but better luck next year! :P

Ok, anyway! Here we are at last at #10—always a tough call to make.  What have you got that’s good enough for the list, but meh enough to go at the bottom of it???

Well in this case we have sneakers.

Description of Toy/Toyline:  ZC Girl Sneakers (aka Chucks)
Produced by ZC (the original Takara CG knock off-makers).

So why did they make my list?
One thing I always have a shortage of for my figures is footwear. These make a nice addition for the collection. With some further detailing on them they could look really, really good IMO.  Plus they’re perfect for the students & artsy people to wear. Yay!
They get extra points because: They fit Takara Cy Girls/ Cool Girls, Volks dollfies (excellent and beauty type) AND they fit Volks Goh Guy dolls too. That’s a real plus since they’re really short on shoes too.

Downside to these: (aka why it isn’t the #1 toy on the list!)
Well, that’s the thing. When I bought these online (as all of my 1:6 stuff comes from the net) I was under the impression that they were hollow. You know, like able to stuff one of the CG flat feet in (not bootfeet base) or something like that. So when they arrived and I found pegs in one set and holes for peg but no way to fit a whole foot I was a bit bummed.

Of course, the fact that Volks dollies, Neo & Goh guys all have removable feet meant that they were totally usable.

General Comments

And as always I have to send a call out to Shaun Wong over at the Fortress of Testicular Fortitude.  He got me hooked on doing the yearly top ten! Thanks Shaun!

Just a  quick post to let y’all know I finally listed a couple of the miniature bonsai trees in my Etsy shop! They’re pricey little sprigs but hey, they took lots of time to make so it’s how it is!

Later this week I’ll be updating with some new books for the shop too, and maybe, just maybe some 1:6 clothes!

Ok, I’ve been quiet the last week or so. I know. I’m still fighting this cold. But despite my total lack of energy, constant headache & coughing I was determined to work on something!! Those of you who are regular readers may recall an occasional comment about needing a student lounge/hang out area in the university dorms.  It’s the place were a lot of stuff happens without me needing to cobble together a classroom for it.

My plan on this varied (originally it was a huge room but it’s now been swapped). and it’s almost complete. It needs some further details & props but it’s definitely 2/3 of the way done as far as I’m concerned.

Points to bear in mind:

  • The Student Lounge shares the same base  & walls as the Small Living Room set (aka the Friday Monologue room) & the Kitchen set & the Student Dorm Bedroom Set.
  • The curtains need to be re-done & hung correctly.
  • I need to paint the coffee table.
  • I painted some uber-ugly paintings for the back wall (the wall behind the sofa) which I’ll hang the next time I take pics.
  • I have decided I am going to remove the chain cords from the hanging lamps.  I was going for a certain look but they simply look too distracting.
  • I’m proud of the tiny cork board I made. And yes, it’s real cork. It’s very small & very fine so it will look correct in scale for close up shots.

Ok soooo… Here are a few pics (I promise I’ll take more of them when I get back and can actually update the website/ Dioramas section).  These are just showing the roomset from a couple different angles–since I was trying to figure out how I wanted to do the room’s layout.

View from the front (window wall removed)

View from the back wall (removed)

Partial view from side wall (I was too beat to remove the walls at this point

Anyway I expect I’ll be back to finishing it up next sunday. Then after that it’s back to fireplace building & livingrooms & cafe making!

Yea I know it’s probably not going to happen what with my current state of being and whatnot, but I wanted to make note of what I feel are the more important projects that I want to try to finish/ make serious headway on/ start before 2011 moves on in…. (OMG can you believe it’s almost 2011? I remember in the 80′s writing cyberpunk stories and setting them in grim, dark and horrible 2012! LOL)

Anyway the list (for now):

The Cup & Saucery Cafe:

  • Fixtures & walls:
    • Walls - need painting.
    • Counter - needs flip top added.
    • Cabinets - need to be painted & attached to walls.
    • Cafe tables & chairs – need detailing
    • Cafe door – needs door handles made (and letter slot)
    • Cafe window – needs name, logo & lettering
    • Faux “outdoors” area/sidewalk area visible through window
  • Props & Accessories:
    • Need to make a large espresso machine
    • Cups & crockery need to be customized to fit the theme.
    • need to make some mini coffee & tea related content (bags, boxes & gift sets)
    • cakes & cookies for display cases

Giselle & Marissa’s Living Room

  • Fixtures:
    • Walls - need to be painted.
    • Fireplace – needs to be completed & painted.
    • Floor - needs to be cut & laid in & glued down.
  • Props & Accessories:
    • Furniture - couch, coffee table, 2 end tables & bookshelves
    • Curtains - 2 windows & 3 doors
    • Plants & misc. brick-a-brack

O—–kaaaaaay…..

Looking at that list it really doesn’t seem likely I’ll get it all done before the new year but you never know. If I really push it, it might just happen!

.

You know, sometimes I feel like I live at the edge of the known world…an outpost where I’m socially isolated. My family is an ocean away, and well, all my friends live in other countries!! So….when I get something in the mail (from a friend) I get a bit choked up, a little sad and a lot happy! It makes me remember that I’m not forgotten even if I am miles away!

Today, I got a truly wonderful gift in the mail today from my good friend Will (you can find his blog here). This was a belated birthday present. Maaaaan, did I totally make out like a bandit this year, or what??!!

He’s known for a while that I have a serious shortage of men-folk in my cast & has been instrumental in finding some guys in the past—and wow, talk about a lovely birthday present! I got some guys to add to my new photostory cast! And some other spiffy stuff too!

First, lemme share the guys who came with bodies!! (yay for bodies!!) :-)

First up is Sam (newly re-named Christopher Arden, actor on the costume drama Wrenwood Hall)

Next is our friendly detective & a member of the Quinlan PD: (who came completely dressed & packing heat!)

and also, mr. skinny Hot Toys action figure guy: (Don’t ask me what’s up with his pose, ok?)

And remember I mentioned other stuff?

I’m particularly happy about getting the evil-looking Wesker head! He might be a professor or maybe an actor on the costume drama. Not sure…except that I know he’s a demon who has a secret (and nasty) agenda!! Any comments on if he should be an actor….or something else?

Will was also cool enough to send me some spare hands, a TTL girl head (who might end up being another cougar), an Ice head so that down the line I can do an alternative version of Paloma, a shoulder holster for Cass to wear, some funky shoes from Hot Toys Cha cha asai, a skull-thingy, some goggles that will be awesome for my next steampunk custom, and some small glass beads that he thought looked like ice!

Now I’ll tell you, that’s just one hell of a present! :D

And you know, I’d be just as happy if my friends just sent me lame birthday cards & letters. It’s just really, really nice to know I’m on someone’s mind, sometimes.

Did I mention that this month has been crackin’ busy? I don’t seem to be able to catch my breath between the weekly sewing challenges & working on the fireplace and the apartment diorama and trying to develop some characters for the new photostory!

Anyway I wanted to share an update on how the roomset  for my Fashion Royalty girls Giselle, & yet to be named Kyori is coming along!

1:6 scale apartment

You can see where my fireplace is going to go (once I finish cladding it in stone).

I know that looking at it like that it might be kind of hard to imagine it…. So fast forward two weeks and this is what it currently looks like:

(I have more progress to show on the fireplace but I haven’t got an upto date pic so that will wait until over the weekend)

You can see the french doors in process along with the windows. Still need to work out the handles for the doors as well as the locks/latches for the windows.

This week coming:

  • need to cut the flooring
  • finish the fireplace
    • cut & attach stonework
    • paint stones & grout
  • paint the living-room walls (and decide on what color the accent (fireplace) wall should be.

Anyway that’s the update for now! Feel free to comment! :)

Yep. I said Free! Now, before you all start thinking my blog’s been taken over by one of those crappy marketing bugs lemme ‘splain!

I’m a member and a general lurker of the Doll Divas board. I’ve hung out there a lot the last 5 years and although I don’t post a lot I generally take part in the contests & games that they schedule a few times a year. I like winning treats & prizes –who doesn’t?

On Saturday the 30th of October the Doll Divas board is having what they call a Monster Mash.

You don’t have to be a regular board member to join in (although i guess it would be nice if you were or well, at least visit it occasionally! Like my blog! LOL)

This year I’ve donated some goodies from my Etsy Shop  to add to the fun.  Couple of books, some pillows–the little things that do help dioramas & roomsets feel a little more complete. :)

Here are the previews (LOL)

I thought it would be good to give back and spread some of the prop-love. And yea, if you win something (or even if you don’t!) feel free to check out my etsy shop…

Hope to see you there having fun! :)

.

Ever feel torn between two choices when it comes to how to do something?  I’ve been wrestling with how I want to go about making some of the costumes for Wrenwood Hall.  I think I’ve made my decision but I’m not entirely sure I won’t change my mind down the road!

About  Wrenwood Hall: at this moment it’s a costume drama set in Tudor England somewhere between the 1530′s-1540′s.

Giselle, Kyori (yet to be named) and some of my Hot Toys action figure guys act in it.  It is what the two of them do for a living & although their photostories don’t necessarily revolve around it I think it’s important.  And yea, I know a lot of costuming that I might never, ever use again. Hell, I might make it all and not even use it once.  Or I might just totally love it and want to dress the dolls up in it all the time LOL.

Who can say?

I do have a weakness for the Tudor time period, and nicely enough for Venice and Florence of the same time period (wasn’t the renaissance great!) so it’d leave me some wiggle room for introducing characters with farther flung geographical roots). Anyway, whatever.  Right now Wrenwood hall is a total figment of my imagination.  But I love the idea since it’s a story inside a story.  And heck, why not?

Back to the Costuming issues:

Tudor. Lots of layers. (for an example check out Ninya Mikhaila’s awesome site)

I’m using a hodgepodge of my online resources & my copy of The Tudor Tailor to work out some patterns that will work for the different body types.  You wouldn’t think it’d be that difficult except that I’m dealing with a plastic body that won’t conform to the silhouette of the time period.  Which means I have to “fudge” things. I really want to try to keep things as accurate as I can–I don’t want to end up making the kind of hideous mistakes that some costume designers have in costume dramas (sorry I do have a severe weakness for costume dramas but being a semi-authenticity freak I tend to tear them apart as I watch them). The other downside is that if I am dressing them as accurately as I can all those layers will add up (even if I made everything out of superfine fabrics) and well, eh.

I find it a bit funny that the scrawny, mostly flat chested  Nu Face body looks closer to “right” than the regular Fashion Royalty body.  I’m trying to decide if I am going to screw around with the profile of the dresses so that I can make them look ok on the “grown up”  FR bodies.   I probably will.   At the end of the day I figure it’s a “costume drama” and anyone who watches those at the movies or on TV will know that although costume designers might try to keep things close to accurate—they don’t always. And some of them go on some serious departures from realism!

Fabric: Another challenge has been finding fabrics that will look “right” for the costumes.  Rich, luxurious fabrics are the way to go… Unfortunately, although I’d like to make some velvet clothing I haven’t had much luck finding a thin/low pile velvet(or velveteen) that will work. I’m going to keep my eyes out but so far it doesn’t seem to be happening.  I’ve got some silk, and some cotton  (yea I know cotton wasn’t very common in the time period but I’m not shelling out $$$ for handkerchief weight linen so there! :P ) to use. I do have some various pieces that I hope will do the job. I won’t know until I get to the “making” part of it. I have been keeping my eyes peeled for some smaller patterned pieces that would work as damask but so far no luck on that score.  And my luck being what it is–the local shop that used to carry a pretty good range of upholstery fabric just scaled back their selection to almost nada. Grrr!

Accessories: Jewelry is the biggest one I can think of and it’ll take some doing on my part. I might actually break down and use the last of my savings and buy a casting kit. Then at least I could make what I want.  Am I insane, or what??  I could try to make the pieces out of fimo/polymer clay but my track record with the small stuff isn’t so great. Plus it won’t weigh properly and won’t hang right.  *sigh* I’ll have to wait and see on that one. . .

Ok, well–there you have it–the sewing considerations that are currently on my mind!

This is just a quick update for anyone who’s actually following along with my efforts in making the fireplace! Not a whole lot to show…but I’m getting there.

Here’s what I spent the last day or two doing:

Saw, saw,saw…and saw some more!

And after cutting out all 50+ pieces (I’m not even ready to begin thinking about how many I have to do for the rest of it) I decided to work on the inside of the fireplace.

They’ve been given the first coating & wash of paint to help make the mortar look ok.

and here they are with another darker coating: (initially I was going to make the bricks red…now I dont know if I should leave them grey since the mortar for the rest of the fireplace will be grey too.)

Other than that not a whole lot to show so far. Ok, well I did manage to stab and slice my index finger pretty badly today (can we say ouch!) but hopefully it will mend soon.

Also known as– Happy Birthday to Meeee!

Yes, that’s right…My birthday’s rolled around again and this year I’ve really hit the jackpot as far as presents go! *giant grin* I was really lucky & got a package in the mail from my good friend Carmen (you know her, right? The Chick who runs Smidgehouse?!)

Look at the giant box, right? (Just try to imagine it without the huge cat on top of it, ok?)

and of course Electra had to stick her nose in too….

This was a really special package for me because not only had Carmen included all sorts of goodies for me (including bright & cheery tissue paper) BUT–it also had part of the birthday presents I’d bought myself! I’ll show you those last)

So there were all sorts of great things in here:(all nicely wrapped BTW & a sweet card)

(I’m terrible at actually taking pics when opening stuff so sorry–these are crap but let me tell you–awesome stuff!)

Did I mention nicely wrapped??!!

Anyway, Carmen got me the package of Barbie Basics shoes I’ve been drooling over & trying to get (but failing miserably!)

Yay! Shooooooes! Some of them will invariably get repainted to blend into wardrobes a bit more but Yay!!  And I know it’s hard to tell from the pic below–but there are swiss rolls (yum), Paintbrushes (yay!) and doll clothes (woo!)

This is a better shot of the clothes (I think these might be from the Liv doll line?) And I know I’ve been around Blythe’s too long when I thought the trim choker/scarf thing was a headband/hair band for Blythe LOL!

And some nifty trays! If you want some similar to these you can find them in her lovely shop at etsy! Eugenia is modeling the liv top.

And here’s probably my most favorite gift:

And here you can see it with the 2 presents I bought myself:

Yea. I broke down and bought them both! And Actually there’s a Flight Pattern Kyori headed my way too. I tell you a long drought without any dolls or action figures and now I’ve gone a little overboard….maybe?

And I got an awesome “e-card” from Nat over at Milkshake Melody!

That’s my Shay getting into naughtiness!

And of course, there’s the other awesome present—the windows & doors Mark is making for my Living-room diorama! You can see the spot that my fireplace-in progress is going to go!

and here are the door frames:

I’ll take better pictures of everything later! I promise!
