I started this quilt in the middle of the great internet blackout of 2011 :P mostly as a way to try to keep sane and not constantly be thinking bout talking to my friends online. I’ll say here and now that the photos for this post suck. I switched over all our bulbs to the energy efficient ones and I haven’t been able to get them quite right yet. Even with the custom wb & post processing.  :(

It is pretty bright. Nothing wrong with vibrant colors — but wow, huh?

The patches all started out as individual squares. And no, before you start thinking I’m an absolute masochist–there was a reason for this: I had already had a number of them cut (to the wrong size for my Insanity quilt) and this seemed like the perfect way to use them and not end up wasting the fabric. I didn’t know if it was going to work but I gave it a try and I’m pretty pleased with  the overall look. Next time I’ll try to do it as a Nine Patch rather than just random placements.

This quilt marks a lot of firsts for me.

  • It was the first patchwork I completed. The other one I’d started got tossed in the bin as a needless exercise in frustration),
  • The first time I made my own bias binding (not as hard as I thought it was)
  • The first whole doll blanket that I bothered to quilt by hand. Although I have to admit that it was a pain, and it is part of the reason why Nerissa’s Quilt is only lightly quilted.
  • I used a combination of tying & hand stitching to quilt the quilt.

So I sewed all the patches together, quilted it, washed it and now comes the really hard part–deciding which character gets it!  After sticking them on it I came to 3 conclusions. Shayna could have it (but since I’m working on the insanity quilt for her it doesn’t seem right she should have two. Does it??Nope.) So….either  Mallory or Parker will get it.

Maybe you folks can help me decide? Who do you think owns this quilt? I’ve snapped a few pics of each with the patchwork quilt so you can help me decide! :D There’s a poll at the end of this post–please vote! :D

Sooo..what do you think??

  1. As much as I admire the result, I can’t for the life of me understand that you did it to stay sane… ;) Our definition of “sane” obviously differs. :D

    • Oh and I voted for Mallory. Somehow the quilt does look wrong to me with Parker’s hair colour.

    • LMAO! :D :D
It’s mostly because I had nothing else I could do other than eat! So in the interests of not gaining another 15 pounds, I thought it was a better way to spend my time. Plus it was something I could sit and do and see actual concrete results. ;) that helps a lot when you don’t feel like you have control over anything else going on in your life. Selling our house = something I never want to have to experience again!

  2. That’s so funny. Almost everyone voted for Mallory! Myself included. It just looks more like her. Maybe because her face looks peppy and bubbly. Parker seems like she would have more subdued colors.

    Beautiful work though, wow!

  3. I actually voted for Parker. Both girls look great with the quilt, but for me that fact that Parker has color going through her hair says she enjoys color. Mallory is adorable and has a smart good girl feel. Not so sure she would choose a patchwork quilt to express herself. Regardless….the quilt is jaw dropping. :)

  4. Wow, the quilt is gorgeous! I voted for Mallory. Not sure why, but she looks pretty in the picture.

  5. Awesome job! It’s gorgeous. I voted for Mallory only after reading their bios and seeing that Mallory likes being different from everyone else and that she likes vivid color. No one else is going to have that quilt at college. It didn’t seem to fit Parker’s personality.

  6. My initial thought based on appearances alone was Parker simply for her fun streaks of pink hair. BUT after reading theirs bios…not only do I think this should go to Mallory, I can see it as something she would have created herself!

Either way it is fantastic! I’d really like to try my hand at tiny quilting and cannot wait to get my fabric out of storage so I can! :-)

  7. I love the yellow pillow with the cloud and rainbow! Reminds me of the Care Bears.

  8. Oh the quilt is amazing! What size were the squares? I can’t imagine my sewing machine being happy to sew little pieces together, lol.. it’s eat them!

I think it goes better with Mallory – she’s seems down to earth and homey.. and a handmade quilt (regardless of colors) sees to fit that description to me. Of course, whichever girl gets it, I’m sure they’ll love it.

  9. OMG it’s the yellow rainbow fabric I sent you. LOL!!! I can’t believe you used that for the underside of the quilt. Slowly starting to love the doofiness of that fabric… and I still have like 4 yards of it. Geez! Saved for posterity in the form of a quilt, I’m sure the fabric is quite happy. XD

    Team Mallory!

  10. I like the bright quilt with Mallory. Parker’s favorite colors are down as pink and silver (bio) so I don’t see her with such an assertively bright quilt.

But wow, how lucky the owner of that quilt is. It’s beee yoo tif ul.

Thanks for sharing your work ;-D
